Paying homage to Eartha Kitt

Everybody should have an anthem. Mine is Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby.” You don’t have to be a gold-digger to appreciate lyrics like:

Santa baby, just slip a sable under the tree for me….

Santa honey, I want a yacht and really that’s not a lot….

Santa cutie, there’s one thing I really do need, the deed, to a platinum mine….

Santa honey, forgot to mention one little thing, a rrrrring. I don’t mean on the phone, Santa honey.

It’s just wishful thinking. I play “Santa Baby” continuously during the holidays. Since Eartha sadly succumbed to colon cancer on Christmas Day, I just might pay homage to this legendary star by playing her trademark song year round in 2009. R.I.P. Eartha.

  1. During one of her performances at the Carlyle in the ’80’s, Eartha Kitt sat on my lap and sang “Santa Baby” – to me. It was pretty exciting for a young man in his 20’s … of course, that was about 20 years ago and if it happened today, it would be just as exciting! RIP, Eartha Kitt. You were GRAND!
